QUICK HITS!

It was an honor and a pleasure to present at Madrid’s Instituto Cervantes last week and at Virginia Military Institute this past week. Last week was all about the late and always great Carmen Laforet, and this week was an inspiring session to talk with VMI’s women about their collective work.

Instituto Cervantes de Madrid: Round table presentation (Professor José Teruel, Professor Rocío Rojas-Marcos, Professor, Ellen Mayock, Editor Christina Linares), “Carmen Laforet y la amistad,” on the Correspondencia inédita (1957-1987) de Carmen Laforet y Emilio Sanz de Soto (Renacimiento, 2023; edición de José Teruel). February 26, 2024.

Hybrid Memoir: Small Town Feminist. I started the Gender Shrapnel Blog/Small Town Feminist in August of 2016, before I fully believed that Trump could win the presidency, and so the manuscript details, through the lens of gender and its intersections, my reactions to national, state, and local political machinations and my growing agenda in the public humanities. The essays in Small Town Feminist contain some of the academic scaffolding so apparent in the 2016 Gender Shrapnel book but are much more geared towards a broad readership. The four sections of the work, arranged as neatly as possible by both chronology and theme, treat intersectional questions of gender in national and local politics, education, the media, and the workplace.  All of the essays “hit home”; that is, the more formal examinations of gender, class, and race are enmeshed in my own life and in that of those around me.  A few of the essays offer, through hybrid modes (poetry, a one-act play, a monologue), poignant and playful takes on many of the issues addressed throughout the manuscript.
